The 2008 National Defense Authorization Act authorized the Secretary of Defense to conduct a program to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. The official 50th anniversary of the initiation of the War in the Republic of Vietnam was in 2014. The Commemorative Partner Program is designed for federal, state and local communities, veteran’s organizations and other non-governmental organizations to assist a grateful nation in thanking and honoring our Vietnam Veterans and their families for their service during August 5, 1964 through May 7, 1975. The City of Sanford and Seminole County are Vietnam War Commemorative Partners with the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration.
Commemorative Partners are encouraged to participate in the Commemoration of the Vietnam War by planning and conducting events and activities that will recognize Vietnam Veterans and their family’s service, valor, and sacrifice. On July 1, in partnership with the Sanford Ministers Fellowship, the City of Sanford, Seminole County and the Department of Defense will recognize, honor and “Welcome Home” our community’s Vietnam Veterans at the First Annual Sanford/Seminole County Veterans Appreciation. This is an opportunity to say thank you to our Vietnam Veterans, remembering the 50th Anniversary of the introduction of combat troops into Vietnam.
Vietnam Veterans and their guests along with dignitaries at the local, state and federal levels will be in attendance. The Keynote Speaker is Major General Arnold Fields USMC (ret) of the Vietnam War Commemoration Office. At this noteworthy event, Mayor Jeff Triplett and Brenda Carey, Chairman of the Seminole County Board of County Commissioners will present each Vietnam Veteran with a Commemorative Lapel Pin on behalf of the Department of Defense.
Media are welcome to attend, Wed. July 1, 10:30 AM –1:00 PM, Sanford Civic Center, 401 East Seminole Blvd.
