To learn more about a worthwhile project to capture the life experiences and memories of Veterans who live in Central Florida, read on:
The University of Central Florida Community Veterans History Project intends to record, archive, and make accessible oral history interviews of Central Florida veterans. While these histories will be largely archived and made available through the UCF library, a portion will be contributed to the ongoing Veterans History Project based out of the Library of Congress. To date, we have conducted 25 interviews with a diverse group of veterans, young and old, black and white, men and women. These veterans served in periods of war and peace, from World War II up to, and including, the ongoing conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan. Students have been an important part of this effort. Last semester, 16 students interviewed veterans; this semester 48 students are participating in this project. As part of our outreach efforts, we have made it easier for veterans to sign up; they can do so on the internet at our website. Additional methods of registering can be completed by phone, email, or paper application. We are continually looking for new veterans for our students to interview as well as volunteers to conduct interviews themselves and assist with the project. We have also begun outreach efforts to community groups and organizations that may be able to assist us including the National Vietnam War Museum (Orlando), the Brevard Veterans Council, and the Orlando Veterans Administration offices and facilities. If you or your organization would like to know more about this project, we would be happy to provide you with more information.
