Murphy Helps Advance Defense Authorization Bill with Provisions Key to Central Florida
WASHINGTON – U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park, Fla., this week voted to advance the Fiscal Year 2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that will protect national security and promote economic growth in central Florida. The NDAA sets U.S. defense policy and the budget for the Armed Forces and included key wins for central Florida’s families and economy, including a 2.4 percent pay increase for military service members. The House Armed Services Committee approved the NDAA after a 14-hour-long marathon session. The full House must now consider the legislation.
“The NDAA is a critical part of ensuring America’s national security and the growth of our economy, which is why I pushed for bipartisan reforms and investments that will attract high-quality jobs to central Florida and make our region safer and more prosperous,” said Murphy. “Florida’s contribution to our national defense is a source of great pride for Floridians. In addition, defense spending in Florida is responsible for nearly $80 billion—close to 10 percent—of total economic activity in the state. That is why the National Defense Authorization Act is a critical bill for both our state and our nation. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I will continue to be a strong advocate for our service members and our veterans.”
Murphy worked successfully to include provisions in the NDAA that will help small businesses gain fair access to federal government contracts and will support Florida’s $5 billion Modeling, Simulation and Training (MS&T) industry, which employs approximately 30,000 Floridians. Murphy’s district is a major MS&T hub, and Orlando is home to a National Cyber Range, which the Department of Defense uses to train its personnel on defensive and offensive operations in cyberspace.
