CSC- Natl Security Agency: Opportunities in Tech Transfer Technologies & Methods
Posted on March 17, 2010 in
General News,
My name is Matt Perry and I am with CSC. I am responsible for the technology transfer that is being released by the National Security Agency. I am going to be in Orlando for the SPIE sensor show and while we are in town we would like to try and meet with some local companies that may have an interest in the tech transfer program at NSA.
Here is some general information about the program.
-
NSA, by law, has to share technologies and methods with commercial companies. These technologies and methods are either pending patent or patented.
-
CSC has been contracted for the last 10+ years to identify companies that have or would like to be updated as these technologies and methods are being made available.
-
We use technologies and methods, because there are patents for actual physical technologies and patents for methods. Both also provide access to the scientists who developed them.
Because of the NSA location this program is strong in the Mid-Atlantic. Recently NSA has expressed an interest in developing long-term relationships around their remote facilities and in the Southeast.
Here is what is potentially “in it” for the companies:
-
Access to technologies or methods that have been proven out by NSA in a classified environment.
-
Access to scientist from NSA who have developed these technologies.
-
A jump start on technologies or methods that have already gone through a rigorous R&D and testing process.
-
The Company has the ability to license these patented technologies and methods to enhance, create, or modify their existing business lines.
-
An on-going relationship with NSA. Since we are looking to develop a roster of companies that we can develop relationships over time, these companies will also have that opportunity with NSA. This could lead to other business opportunities.
The “WIN-WIN” scenario: A company licenses a technology or method from NSA and incorporates into their offering, then has access to possibly license the final product back to NSA. This is the “spin out, spin in” example I referred to in my prior email.
Here are the company characteristics we are looking for:
-
Companies that have or want to establish a commercial presence. They can also have a Government presence as well, but we have access to companies selling to the Government already.
-
Companies that have an R&D budget. This does not have to be huge, but some of these technologies or methods are going to require further development.
-
Small to mid-size companies are usually a GREAT fit for this program.

Right now the patents coming down the pike are in Information Assurance and Cyber Security. NSA as you would expect are the kings of Cyber technologies and methods.
Please call me if you have any questions. Sorry for the length of this email.
