“It’s an honor to be selected to lead Kennedy Space Center,” Petro said. “Having grown up on Florida’s Space Coast and being the second generation in my family to work at Kennedy Space Center, it’s truly exciting to help grow the multi-user spaceport as we prepare for Artemis and continue launching commercial crew missions to the International Space Station.”
To many, Petro was an obvious choice for the job, having served as deputy director for KSC since 2007. In a news release, NASA said Petro had played a crucial role in transitioning the space center into a multi-user spaceport, after the government-run Shuttle Program ended in 2011 and private companies stepped in to fill the void. She was also the first woman to hold that position.
