Winning Momentum for Serious Games

December 6, 2011. Orlando, Fla. – The Serious Games Showcase & Challenge (SGS&C) winners were announced at an award ceremony the final day of the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC).  Six teams emerged as winners from I/ITSEC 2011 SGS&C.   Best Serious Game Business Category was awarded to Air Medic Sky One by the University Medical Center Utrecht (Holland), Best Serious Game Student Category was awarded to Garden Defense by Katelyn Procci from the UCF Retro Lab, Best Serious Game Government Category was awarded to First Person Cultural Trainer by US Army’s TRADOC-TRISA, Best Serious Game Mobile Category was awarded to EPP Operator Maintainer Course by C2 Technologies, Best Serious Game for this year’s Special Emphasis Category of Adaptive Force Training was awarded to Bushudo: The Way of the Radical by Mr Kevin Harris of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Best Serious Game People’s Choice was awarded to Quality Tycoon by Northrop-Grumman.

The Serious Games Showcase & Challenge has experienced substantial growth during I/ITSEC over the last six years. The event has drawn so much attention, the award ceremony needed to be moved to a larger area on the I/ITSEC floor (specifically, War Fighters’ Corner). Growth was also evident in the number of game submissions:  2011 welcomed a 45% increase in the number of entries. “Experiencing the growth has been quite rewarding,” stated Eric Sand, Industry Chair, SGS&C.  “It is also important to mention the overall quality of all the games submitted has increased each year.  It is also rewarding to see the number of people who attend the award ceremony thus celebrating a different modality of education.”

The SGS&C is driven by a large committee of volunteers and support from sponsors, who not only provide their time, but equipment donations and student prize packages. The 2011 SGS&C was supported by the following sponsors: Hewlett Packard, MS&T Magazine (Halldale Media), Concurrent Technologies Coroporation, CACI, Intelligent Decisions, Novonics, Unity, Vcom3D, Havok, ASTI, VMASC, VirTra Sytems, and 360Ed.
